Internationalization at UK

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, issues of globalization and internationalization become more important for preparing our students and faculty for participation on a global level. International student enrollment is the highest it has ever been and domestic students’ participation in education abroad is on the rise, according to the most recent “Open Doors” survey (Redden, 2013). Faculty are increasingly collaborating with peers across the globe through exchanges, conferences, technology-enhanced networking, and in other ways.

• There are over 1,687 international students from 100 different countries studying in undergraduate, graduate and UK's intensive English language programs.
• The number of UK students who earn credit abroad has dramatically increased in recent years and has far exceeded national trends in enrollment growth, from just under 600 students in 2009-2010 to over a 1,189 students in 2017-18.
• There are over 600 international faculty, staff and exchange visitors on UK's campus.
• Since Fall 2012 students have studied, interned, conducted research, and taught in over 50 different countries, including destinations such as Cuba, Zambia, and Indonesia.
• UK’s international work is also creating positive change beyond the Commonwealth. Through the hard work of faculty and staff, UK has received significant federal grant dollars to help war-torn countries such as Pakistan and Iraq rebuild the capacity of their higher-education institutions.
• According to NAFSA’s International Student Economic Value Tool during the 2017-18 academic year international students contributed $330.1 million and 2,456 total jobs to the Commonwealth of Kentucky economy.
• The Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) is participating in the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center through its Power Generation Group, and Algae Research to develop next generation of clean coal technologies, carbon capture and storage.
