ABC's Juju Chang Gives IEW Keynote - Unconscious Bias: Anti-Asian Bashing during COVID-19

Juju Chang, Emmy award-winning co-anchor of ABC News' Nightline and Good Morning America, shared how the seemingly harmless perceptions of Asian Americans as "foreigners" can be weaponized by racialized comments such as "Chinese virus" or "Wuhan flu." Moderated by Jennifer Greer, Dean of the College of Information and Information, Chang shared her insights on the increase of reports of these types of incendiary comments and thousands of racial abuse acts against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) within weeks of the COVID-19 outbreak. Chang also explained why we all have unconscious bias, how to detect it, and why it matters to be aware of it.

About IEW

Every year, one week in the fall is transformed from just another week in the year to one that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange, known across universities in the United States as International Education Week. UK will celebrate cultural diversity, globalization and international education during International Education Week (IEW) 2020, Nov. 9-14.

IEW is an annual celebration promoted by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to highlight programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States. As part of the initiative, colleges and universities across the nation are encouraged to host events on their campuses to engage students in international education and exchange. UK will participate in the celebration by shining a light on the many ways education at UK is international.

Throughout the years, UK colleges and departments have hosted events that highlight global learning and encourage education abroad.
