Our Story

Who We Are

Established in early 2014, the Office of China Initiatives (OCI) emerged from strategic discussions initiated by the UK International Center in Spring 2013 and from the recommendation of the International Advisory Council (IAC). Aligning with the UK Strategic Plan, the OCI under the helm of Dr. Huajing Maske (executive director of the OCI and director of the UK Confucius Institute) is committed to working with UK colleges and offices to engage UK students, faculty and the Commonwealth in collaborations with China.

The OCI seeks to strengthen UK's brand name recognition in China, and to link UK Confucius Institute related opportunities to broader UK international strategies and initiatives. The OCI assists in advancing UK's research and scholarship about China, and collaborates with Chinese partner universities on coordinating activities such as graduation and alumni events, as well as pre-departure orientations for new Chinese international students. It facilitates recruitment of Chinese students to UK university partnerships, and provides customized support to Chinese students and scholars throughout their time at UK and beyond. This support helps to ensure Chinese students and scholars' academic success, social/cultural integration, and belonging.

Our Mission

The OCI is committed to providing leadership in identifying, cultivating, building and sustaining UK partnerships with Chinese institutions. Through these partnerships, the OCI offers opportunities for UK faculty, staff and students to connect with China both locally and through travel to China to fulfill educational and professional pursuits. Furthermore, the OCI serves as a welcoming and connecting point to UK and to the Commonwealth for Chinese scholars and students to join or explore possibilities with our University.
