Shoulder to Shoulder has four brigades in which our students can participate. Brigade participants engage in a variety of cultural and service-learning opportunities while providing services such as basic medical and dental care, health education, school health screenings, women’s health, home visits and community-based learning.
* Health education June brigade engages participants in community health promotion, education, public health and Communication Sciences & Disorders and interprofessional health care clinics. May and August are also interprofessional health care clinics but do not generally include a Communication Sciences & Disorders focus.
** Note that the 2022 STSG brigade interprofessional teamwork in global health course, required for all UK fulltime students participating in the 2022 brigades, is currently not accepting more students. If you are a fulltime UK student, you will be able to apply in the fall of 2022 for the 2023 brigades. Healthcare providers and community based participants may still apply to the 2022 brigades. Please email craig.borie@uky.edu for any questions or to be put on the waitlist for 2023.
*** STSG is continuing to monitor developments related to COVID-19 in the U.S. and Ecuador. Because developments are changing so rapidly, we must wait until closer to the time you depart to determine if your program is allowed to travel. Therefore, the University will be reviewing this program to determine if travel to your intended destination is possible. We will update you when the University has made a decision on the status of your participation. For potential May brigade participants, this decision could be as early as the beginning of March.
Please do not pay any STSG fees or purchase your airfare until you are specifically instructed to do so by STSG. Should your program be canceled by UK or STSG leadership, STSG will not be able to reimburse airfare or personal travel expenses.
