Community Courses

Language & Culture Courses

UK Confucius Institute offers various language courses and Chinese culture courses to the Kentucky community and UK community. Courses take place on UK campus and in the evenings so that community members can participate.

This year we are also offering special discounts. 

  1. EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT: Register for UKCI Community Courses before JUNE 1 to receive the Early Registration Discount. Discounted prices are $100 for Faculty, Staff and Senior Citizens, and $200 for Community Members. 
  2. REFER A FRIEND DISCOUNT: Receive 10% off of UKCI Community Courses tuition when you and a friend register for a course. Both you and your friend must register (and list each other as the referral) for a course to receive the discount. This can be used with the Early Registration Discount. 

Our teachers will also be offering online delivery of our classes to make the classes more accessible for everyone. Please indicate whether you will be taking the class online or in-person when you register for classes. 

Chinese Language Courses

Interested in learning the Chinese language? Let us help you become an expert in Chinese language and get exposed to Chinese art and culture, by developing your skills and practicing speaking, listening, reading and writing of Chinese characters.  

Classes begin September 8 and end December 15.  

 

Course Options

Chinese 1A

Develop your ability to distinguish the Chinese language by ear and learn how to write and pronounce individual syllables in the phonetic system of Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn how to use basic Chinese vocabulary and form sentences.  

Pre-requisites: None 

  • Time: Monday and Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Chinese 1B

Focus on learning to accurately pronounce Chinese and expand vocabulary skills.  Students will use basic vocabulary to form sentences, learn more Chinese characters, and study the order of strokes and the radical.  

Pre-requisites: Completion of one semester of language studies and mastered 100 Chinese characters.  

  • Time: Monday and Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Chinese 2A

Students will practice pronunciation and vocabulary while learning to read and write passages. Students will begin to use basic Chinese grammar to communicate with each other and prepare for real-life Chinese experiences.  

Pre-requisite: Completion of two semesters of language studies and mastery of 150 Chinese characters. 

  • Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Chinese 2B

Students can enroll in this course to continue developing pronunciation and vocabulary while focusing on advancing reading and writing skills. 

Pre-requisite: Completion of three semesters of language studies and mastery of 200 Chinese characters. 

  • Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. 

  • Location: White Hall Classroom Building, Room 306

  • Cost:

Chinese 3A

Students can enroll in this course to advance fluency in the language and improve their expressive capability. Students will have the opportunity to communicate with native Chinese speakers in preparation for real-life experiences in China.  

Pre-requisites: Completion of four semesters of language studies and mastery of 300 Chinese characters. 

  • Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. 

  • Location: White Hall Classroom Building, Room 338

  • Cost:

Chinese 3B

Designed to improve students’ expressive capability, students will develop a deeper understanding of the language and culture, and continue to communicate with native Chinese speakers.  

Pre-requisites: Completion of five semesters of language studies mastery of 400 Chinese characters.  

  • Time: Monday and Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. -  6:30 p.m.

Business Chinese

Improve basic Chinese language and learn professional skills to accomplish business purposes in Chinese. Students will focus on daily communication in a business setting.  

Pre-requisites: None.

HSK Tutor Course

The intensive practice course is designed for HSK candidates, aimed to help them to achieve higher scores on HSK, which comprises of Elementary Level (Level 1-2) and Intermediate Level (Level 3-4). 6 class sessions, with 1 session/week, 6 weeks before HSK Exam.

Pre-requisites: None.

Chinese Culture Courses

Learn art, a traditional Chinese instrument, Tai Chi or Martial Arts with our Chinese specialists. Classes begin January 20 and end April 30.

Students will improve physical coordination and learn techniques to allow the body to fight against disease and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Martial Arts

Learn the Chinese art of self-defense through strikes, punches and kicks. Techniques emphasize physical discipline, respect for the body and mental focus.

Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese Calligraphy is a kind of expressive art. Through the combination of the use of brushes and ink on Xuan paper, it forms a profound black and white composition on the paper. Through classroom teaching practice, students can experience the combination of Chinese characters, the use of brushes and ink, the writing process of different calligraphy fonts such as regular script, official script and running script, and feel the beauty of rigidity and softness.

Pipa

Pipa is the main instrument in Chinese traditional music, it is also called the Chinese lute. It is a four-stringed instrument, one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments with over 2000 years of history. Students will learn some basic skills in the class.

Chinese Painting

Chinese Painting is an important part of Chinese culture. It is showing the emotion and spirit of the author by the black inks. This term,we will learn the basic methods of Chinese traditional painting with different topics. Hope you can develop your painting skills and experience colorful Chinese Culture in my class!

Tea Ceremony

China is the first country to discover tea trees and uses tea trees, Tea ceremony performance can show the customs and ways of drinking tea in China. Drinking tea is not only good for people's health but also many artists in China create many poems, calligraphy, drama, dance, music, and paintings based on tea culture. Everyone will know about the process of making traditional Chinese tea and also can feel the Chinese lifestyle. In the course, you will learn the basic knowledge of traditional Chinese tea ceremony, including the types of Chinese tea and a variety of tea sets, also will learn the process of tasting Chinese tea and experiencing tea ceremony performances.
