In celebration of the fifth anniversary of the University of Kentucky Confucius Institute (UKCI), the Shanghai University Folk Music Troupe was invited to perform on October 3, 2015 at the UK Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall. More than 300 audience members attended and applauded the evening’s performance with a standing ovation.
The program featured several pieces including a string ensemble, which ingeniously demonstrated the use of Chinese traditional musical instruments such as erhu, yangqin, pipa, liuqin and guzheng, and erhu and zhongruan solos accompanied by piano. Together these pieces proved to be a wonderful combination of Chinese and Western musical elements, with the fan dance and martial arts demonstrations also winning enthusiastic applause from the audience.
“It is amazing to hear those familiar western music pieces played with Chinese traditional musical instruments, presenting a distinctive but charming flavor,” said Justin, a UK student in attendance.
Dr. Huajing Maske, director of UKCI, also expressed her sentiments: “We are pleased to have the students and faculty from Shanghai University to join us in celebrating our fifth anniversary and UKCI will endeavor to create more successful partnerships in China and to introduce more classic Chinese cultures and arts to UK, local Kentucky schools and the community at large.”
