UK Confucius Institute Hosts K-12 Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp

School is almost out for summer, but that doesn’t mean that learning needs to take a break too. The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute (UKCI) gives children and teens the opportunity to expand their education of Chinese language and culture through its two-week summer camp during the month of June.

The camps are designed for different grade levels, giving all K-12 students the opportunity to engage in interactive and educational activities taught by UKCI teachers. Each activity focuses on Chinese language, art, culture and tradition. Not only will students get hands-on experience through this camp, but they will also meet and make new friends from different cultural backgrounds.

“Last year the camp had 33 students from K-12 schools in the area. Students were able to share their knowledge of Chinese language and culture with their family, friends and classmates,” said Jie Dai, UKCI’s camp coordinator.

The first week of the camp will run June 5-9, and the second week will begin June 12 and end June 16. Activities will start at 8:30 a.m. and go until 12:30 p.m. each day.

Students can register for one, or both weeks of the camp, at a cost of $90 per week or $180 for both. An early bird discount of 10 percent is available if students register by April 29, and the final application deadline is May 31. All payments for the camp must be made by June 2.

“What is great about this camp is that it increases the cultural enrichment that we can provide for K-12 schools in the community,” Dai said.
