The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute’s popular K-12 Spring Camp series is returning once again for 2019, taking a new and exciting approach to teaching students about Chinese culture and language. The Language and Culture Camps offer Chinese language and culture experiences to students in the Lexington area, with instructors immersing campers in Chinese culture through hands-on activities and fun games.
The 2019 camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 1-5. This year’s theme is “Bite-sized China,” focusing on one element of Chinese culture each day, including food, music, dance, calligraphy, painting, handicrafts, games, and martial arts. The application deadline for spring camp is March 16, with payment deadline set for the first day of camp.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for area students to experience Chinese language and culture,” said Carrie Wheeler, K-12 teacher coordinator at UKCI. “This year we want campers to use all of their senses to explore different aspects of China while at the same time having the opportunity to meet others their age who are interested in these topics.”
The five-day camp costs $150 per student per week, with half-day registration options also available. Those who pay by March 9 can earn a 10 percent early-bird discount, with checks payable to the UK Confucius Institute.
