UKCI to Host “Explore China Event at Cincinnati Art Museum

Friday, May 4, 2018 | By Steven Sommer

The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute is expanding its horizons this weekend, hosting the “Explore China” cultural event on Saturday, May 5, from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Cincinnati Art Museum. The event, free to the public, is the UKCI’s first partnership with the Cincinnati Art Museum and is one of its first programs in the greater Cincinnati area.

The event will feature a series of hands-on learning opportunities for guests of all ages. The display will allow participants to learn Chinese calligraphy, lantern making, and ink-blown paintings. Additionally, the UKCI will have multiple performances throughout the day:

  • Dragon Dance Team (1:00 p.m.- 1:30 p.m., Courtyard): Most often seen at festive celebrations, the Dragon dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture. Experience the art that dates back to the Han dynasty, as the dance team performs in the Courtyard.
  • Chinese Three Perfections (2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Great Hall): Learn about the Chinese three perfections in a display of music and art, taking place twice in the Great Hall. The UKCI’s specialists will lead guests through a cultural journey, exposing them to the traditional Chinese music of the guzheng and ehru, beautiful calligraphy, and the ancient art of Tai Chi or the traditional Tea Ceremony.

The event is in collaboration with the Cincinnati Art Museum’s special exhibition, “Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China,” which is on display until August 12. While the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Explore China event are both free, guests looking to visit the special exhibition will need to purchase tickets. The price of general admission is $16, while college students, children (ages 6-17), and seniors (ages 65+) can enter the exhibition for $8. Children ages five and younger are free.
