The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the University of Kentucky International Center (UKIC) have announced the first cohort of UKinSPIRE fellows. UKinSPIRE is an internal funding opportunity for UK faculty, jointly funded by the OVPR and UKIC, intended to stimulate high-impact research projects in any discipline linking UK faculty and international collaborators and to establish collaborations with new international partner institutions or add greater depth to existing institutional partnerships.

Commencement can sometimes be a bittersweet time for graduates. A time to celebrate the amazing accomplishment of graduating from the University of Kentucky, it can also be filled with “goodbyes” or “see you laters” to friends and mentors.

For two former International Student Leadership Team members, though, commencement will be the start of a journey together. Graduates from the College of Design, Tracey Sun and Nashia Olise, will both be attending graduate school at Columbia University this fall, continuing their studies in architecture.

For Ashtarout Ammar, the journey to the University of Kentucky wasn’t an easy one. Originally from a small town in the east mountains of Lebanon near the Syrian border, Ammar grew up in an area where access to higher education was extremely limited, especially for women. Now, she is close to achieving her dream of finishing her Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Kentucky.

Solomon Harrar, a professor in the Dr. Bing Zhang Department of Statistics in the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) to travel to Ethiopia to work with Addis Ababa University (AAU) on teaching, mentoring and research collaboration for Ph.D. training in statistics.

Late University of Kentucky agricultural economics professor Russell Brannon was a leader in his field. He spent his career internationalizing teaching, research and extension. When he passed, his wife Janice knew the best way to memorialize him would be to make sure he remained an influential force in the lives of UK students through a charitable gift.

Established in the spring of 2020, the Global Engagement Academy (GEA) offers free professional development for faculty and staff to build cross-cutting competencies in international education and engagement. Since the program’s inception, 234 UK faculty and staff have participated in the 90 sessions that have been offered so far. The spring 2023 GEA will help past participants build on the foundational knowledge of previous courses, while welcoming new participants just getting started.

Researchers at the University of Kentucky and Hebrew University in Jerusalem are partnering to study the complexity of the human brain. Specifically, researchers will test whether new, so-far unknown proteins exist in the brain.
