Six students placed first in the fourth annual Global Health Case Competition (GHCC) on Saturday, Feb. 3 with their plan to improve palliative care issues in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The competition, hosted by the University of Kentucky’s (UK) International Center Global Health Initiative, encompassed both graduate and undergraduate students in 12 teams to address and propose solutions to real global health issues.

Shoulder to Shoulder Global, a Global Health Initiative at the University of Kentucky, raised $16,136 in the Good Giving Challenge, a fundraising campaign for non-profits hosted by Blue Grass Community Foundation. The funds raised from the challenge, which took place from Nov. 28, 2017 and ran through Dec. 31, 2017, will be used to provide multiple health services to approximately 11,000 patients in Santo Domingo, Ecuador.

Nicole Funk, a junior from Lexington majoring in natural resources and environmental science with a Spanish minor, participated in an Education Abroad semester-long direct exchange program at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Quito, Ecuador. It was through a community internship that Funk received recognition for best of “Pasantía en la Comunidad” (PASEC) work at USFQ. All USFQ students must complete this program in order to graduate, and international students also have the opportunity to complete a PASEC program if they wish.

University of Kentucky researchers will soon travel to Antarctica to study an insect that can tolerate a wide range of extreme environments.

The Antarctic midge is the only insect endemic to the continent, and it is the largest terrestrial animal that spends its entire life there.
