Global Health Virtual Hack-A-Thon to Offer Innovative Solutions to COVID-19 Issues

Wednesday, September 2, 2020 | By Andrea Gils

COVID-19 has turned the world upside down, bringing many challenges to our communities and daily lives. Now it's your chance to propose solutions! All Kentucky residents – students, community, faculty, staff, etc. – are invited to join an all-day COVID-19 Virtual Hack-A-Thon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 19.

To register, click here.

A Hack-A-Thon is an event in which teams join talents to devise solutions to problems, in a sprint-live event. In this case, the teams will work on issues related to COVID-19.   The program will give teams tools to develop their ideas as well as allow plenty of time to work together.  The day will culminate in each group giving a presentation to a panel of judges.

Participants don’t need to register with a pre-assembled team and you can pitch an idea that falls outside of the following Hack Tracks:

  • Transmission/personal protective equipment
  • Social distancing
  • Workplace impact
  • Supply chain
  • Healthcare delivery
  • Testing
  • Contact tracing
  • Other ideas

"People will be able to take the first spark of an idea and in a remarkably short period of time, develop a viable business plan.  I believe that people are tired of what COVID is doing to them and would like to be able to fight back with their own great ideas.  Here's that opportunity," said Melody Ryan, assistant provost for Global Health Initiatives. "I think it will also allow people who don't ordinarily see themselves as part of a global health effort to realize they have a place at the table in combating one of the biggest public health threats of our lifetimes."

The top three teams will win a cash prize and a spot in the spring Entrepreneurs Bootcamp 1.0 to further develop their ideas.

This event is hosted by the Office of Global Health Initiatives, the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship, and Center for Free Enterprise.
