The UK International Center always pursues the connection between its alumni no matter where they are geographically. During 2020, the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and Office of China Initiatives hosted its first-ever virtual China Alumni gathering on October 30. The event was originally supposed to be held in-person in both Beijing and Shanghai, China past March, but had to be converted to a virtual setting due to COVID-19.

The International Center, in collaboration with the Graduate School and College of Arts & Sciences, launched a seven-week program for international graduate students planning to begin their studies at UK in spring 2021. The Graduate Community and Academic Transition Series (GradCATS) program was designed to introduce new graduate students to UK and the surrounding area, build a sense of community among incoming graduate students as well as continuing graduate students, and better prepare participants for the academic demands of their programs.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has made it challenging for all students to return to campus, one group in particular is dealing with more uncertainty — international students. Amid travel restrictions and embassy closures, the UK International Center developed an innovative online program. Global Wildcats allowed 20 international students, who were slated to come to the University of Kentucky campus in Fall 2020, to begin their academic journey from their home countries.

Tamunoemi Braide, an international UK senior student from Port Harcourt, Nigeria majoring in chemical engineering, is working under the Hobbs Research Lab group investigating the degradation of the SARS CoV-2 (also known as COVID-19) RNA in wastewater.

Adrian Lim, UK international alum from Malaysia, was the organizing chairperson for the Feed the Hunger initiative in Malaysia. This initiative provided meals and grocery supplies to households of daily wage earners around Subang Jaya, USJ Subang Jaya and parts of Sunway that were affected by the movement control order (MCO) restrictions in Subang Jaya.
