Through hard work and perseverance, senior Emily Fanning left the picturesque farmlands of Timaru, New Zealand to pursue her tennis career in the United States where she now plays for UK. Fanning described how welcomed she felt when arriving at UK. “People are so friendly, here. For example, as an international student, so many people invited me to their house for Thanksgiving. The team is really warm and inviting,” Fanning said.
Senior laboratory technician, Ann Freytag, hosted her long-standing annual Thanksgiving party for international students from her lab. At her home, about 30 UK students and scholars from different countries gathered to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal while sharing stories and laughter, and learning from each other’s cultures.
University of Kentucky nursing student Mia Jackson discovered her passion for working with children during her experience abroad with the Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) health brigade. Starting in 2009, Ashley W. Seifert, Ph.D, assistant professor at University of Kentucky, began what would become an ongoing project in Kenya to investigate a possible link between regeneration and immunity in wild rodents. While Seifert and his colleagues strive to understand the basic biology about how diverse vertebrates are capable of re-growing complex tissues, they also hope to their knowledge will inform new therapies to address human healing.

As a result, she followed her passion through the UK Education Abroad Program at Maejo University in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand which eventually led to her current teaching position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
