Meet the Speakers

Being employed as a child in the antique auction circuit started Mr. Schein early in understanding the ways of collectors, collections, history, and archiving. Arriving as a teenager to a warehouse job in San Francisco provided an excellent backdrop to explore and become educated as a student of San Francisco history, with the abundant resources of historians, antique books, and map dealers and enthusiasts available locally for the past four decades. Yan Wang is a certified K-12 Chinese language teacher with leadership endorsement in Fayette County Public School (FCPS), Kentucky. She has over 15 years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the U.S. and eight years teaching college Russian in China. She holds master’s degrees in education and Russian Language and Literacy. Before coming to the U.S., she was an associate professor teaching Russian at North-East University, China. Stayc DuBravac is a Professor of second language acquisition at the University of Kentucky. He earned his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in Second Language Acquisition. He has been teaching graduate courses and training teachers for the past 30 years and his most rewarding educational work has been contributing to the development of new and practicing teachers. He has published books in French and Spanish and trained teachers on every continent. He has taught ESL at numerous locations in China, France, Korea, Japan, Bolivia, and the United States. Lucy Chu Lee is the College Board AP Chinese Consultant, an AP Summer Institute instructor, and a member of the AP Chinese content Development Team. Lee has been named NECTFL 2012 Teacher of the Year and New Jersey State County 2013 Teacher of the Year. She is also the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Leader in Education from Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. She served as an Assessment Specialist for the SAT II Chinese Test and the lead instructor for the Rutgers STARTALK Chinese Teacher Program. Download the Conference Catalog to read the full bio.

Dr. Leslie David Burns is an Associate Professor of Literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and serves as both Program Chair of Secondary English Education and a member of the Literacy Program Faculty.
Dr. Burns is a winner of the Literacy Research Association’s Edward Fry Book Award for the advancement of knowledge in the field of literacy. He is also a recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English’s Janet Emig Award and Edwin Hopkins Award for exceptional scholarship in English Education. Dr. Cheryl E. Matias was recently awarded the 2020 American Educational Research Association Mid-Career Award for her work on racial justice in teacher education! She is a Full Professor and Director of Secondary Teacher Education at the University of Kentucky. Her research focuses on race and ethnic studies in education with a theoretical focus on critical race theory, critical whiteness studies, critical pedagogy and feminism of color. Specifically, she uses a feminist of color approach to deconstruct the emotionality of whiteness in urban teacher education and how it impacts urban education. Dr. Helena Curtain is an Independent Education Management Professional. Dr. Curtain has varied experience as a foreign/second language educator and has taught at elementary school through university levels. She served as Foreign Language Curriculum Specialist for the Milwaukee Public Schools for many years and in that capacity coordinated and supervised K-12 foreign language and ESL programs.
