Teach in China

1.  Eligibility:  UK faculty in various disciplines

2.  Chinese University Teaching Location: Jilin University, Changchun, China

3.  Teaching Responsibility: 

• Length: Three weeks: Monday, May 14 –  Monday, June 4, 2018 (Travel time is not included in this time frame)

1) Teach two 2-hour classes a week for three weeks (6 classes total);

2) Give a presentation or organize a workshop in your research area; 

3) Participate in JLU-organized activities;

                            4) Collaborate with a JLU faculty member on a research plan 

• Teaching hours:  12 hours (JLU students earn 1 credit)
• Time of the year: May 14 to June 4, 2018

4.  Subjects:  General Education courses for primarily first & second year undergraduate students (Entrepreneurship & Innovation Courses enjoy top priority). Please see suggested courses below. All courses should be taught in English.
 

General Education courses for freshman and second-year students (Entrepreneurship & Innovation Courses enjoy top priority). Suggested courses Include, but are not limited to, the following areas:  

• Literature and Arts: Cultivate the humanistic and artistic quality of students by reading classic literature and by appreciation of artistic work. 

• History and Culture: Understand the origin of human civilization and development; Think about the human phenomena and civilization to cultivate analysis skill and global perspective. 

• Philosophy and Wisdom: Foster independent and critical thinking, reasoning ability and appropriate values. 

• Language and Communication: Study communication skills, expand interpersonal relationships and improve organization skills.  

• Citizen and Society: Cultivate citizen awareness and qualities of leaders. 

• Market economy and strategic management: Understand the relationship between economy, management, and people’s lifestyle to adapt to the modern society 

• Globalization and social development: Analyze the economic and social phenomenon to understand the economic and financial policy and to adapt to the diversified society. 

• Natural evolution and life care: Understand the natural evolution and biology evolution, explore the meaning of life and care for life. 

• Technological progress and human development: Understand the motive of human development and have the spirit of exploration. 

• Technological innovation and scientific method: Explore the development and influence of the natural science, life science, and engineering science. Study the methods of knowledge organization, analysis and discovery of the world. 

• Entrepreneur and innovation: Examine the process by which innovations can be achieved, and understand how environmental and sustainability innovations can be successfully integrated into business strategy.  

• Other subjects not mentioned above.  

• **Language: All courses should be taught in English

Jilin University will cover the following:

1)    International round-trip tickets (Economy coach class, not exceeding $2,000.00.  Flight route should be from US departure city to Beijing to Changchun and Changchun to Beijing to US departure city.  Faculty are to cover their own expenses if the travel route is different from US City-Beijing-Changchun).

2)    Three weeks (including weekends) accommodation in Changchun

3)    Teaching stipend:  $1200.00  (could be more if extra work is requested by JLU)

4)    A JLU Meal Card to cover meals on campus

• International round trip airfare will be reimbursed in USD and at the end of the first week of teaching.
• Stipend will be paid in RMB (Chinese Yuan) in the last week of teaching.

• A valid passport is needed for this trip. The passport must be valid at least 6 months at the conclusion of the trip, which means, the passport must be valid through December 2018. 
• UKCI will handle the visa application for successful candidates. Candidates are responsible for paying a visa application fee of $333.50. 

• Successful candidates will be covered under UK’s international travel medical insurance and evacuation policy upon registration with the UK International Center. Completion of this registration is a required element of participation in this program.

The UK Office of China Initiatives and Confucius Institute will host two required orientations for faculty who are selected to go to Jilin University.

• 1st orientation: Wednesday, March 28, from 4:30-6:30 PM at the new UKCI
• 2nd orientation: Wednesday, April 18, from 5-7 PM at the new UKCI

1. Eligibility:  UK faculty (Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors) in various disciplines   

2. Location to Teach in China: Qingdao Technological University in Qingdao, China  

3. Program Objectives: To enhance QUT faculty members’ professional English teaching skills and knowledge of teaching methods

4. Teaching:    

   • Length: Three weeks: July 9 - 29, 2018 

   • Teaching Responsibilities:

     1. 10 class hours plus 2 office hours per week, per course 

     2. QTech will work with UK faculty to organize several seminars to discuss social and cultural studies, academic research as well as global education and communication (about 12 seminar hours in total). These seminars  include, but are not limited to, the following topics:  

        • American Higher Education 

        • Development of American Colleges and Universities 

        • American Society and Culture 

        • Global Education and Communication 

     3. UK faculty must submit a curriculum package that includes readings, class session descriptions and assignments. All these materials must be sent to Yinghong Huang at yhu256@uky.edu one month prior to the start of the program.    

5. Course Participants: Full-time faculty from various schools of QUT 

1. Teaching Methodology Seminar:  This course introduces pedagogy related to the teaching of all disciplines in English. It offers teaching methods and strategies, and gives participants opportunities to put into practice the concepts they’ve learned. In addition, the instructor will present authentic materials from various fields, such as engineering and the humanities, for participant analysis. Participants will engage in discussions with the instructor on how to make discipline-related texts approachable to nonnative speakers. Each participant will have the chance to present on the lessons they’ve learned from the course.  
    
2. English Listening and Speaking: This course aims to improve participants’ oral English communication skills, based on task-based, student-oriented methodologies. Participants will also work to improve their classroom communication and presentation skills.  
    
3. Advanced English Reading and Writing: This course aims to review English reading and writing techniques to help participants develop their skills in both areas. Instructors will assign homework based on reading materials. Participants will also complete writing assignments on specific topics covered in the course, such as research abstracts, literary works, academic papers, research proposals and reports, research project development reports, and term papers, among others. Conference keynote speeches and academic journal articles will also be assigned as course readings.

QUT will cover the following:  

• International round-trip tickets (economy class, not exceeding ￥15,000.00/approx. $2,265.00) 

• Accommodation for 23 days in QUT's Xueyuan Hotel 

• Teaching stipend: ￥12,815.00 in total (before tax, approx. $2,000.00) 

• Meal allowance: ￥150.00 per day (approx. $23 per day, 21 days) 

• Two Chinese cultural tours 

• Office space and equipment provided, including computers, printers, etc. 

NOTE:

• International round-trip airfare will be reimbursed after course is completed at the end of the first week.  
• Stipend and allowance will be paid in the second week.

• Length: One month: May 15 to June 15, 2018 
• Teaching Responsibilities:
  1. Teach 4 -12 hours per week, depending on course taught;
  2. Work 5 - 10 hours in office per week, depending on course taught;
  3. Participate in departmental and university activities;
  4. Give presentation or seminar in your research area (optional)
  5. Total Teaching Hours:  16 - 48 (CUMT students receive 0.5-2 credits depending on different courses)

Suggested courses include:

1)    Application of Virtual Reality in Mining Industry (32 class hours)

2)    Science of Mine Ecological Environment (32 class hours)

3)    Introduction to electrical automation (16 class hours)

4)    Electric Power Project Management (32 class hours)

5)    Automatic Control Principle (48 class hours)

6)    Engineering Surveying (32 class hours)

7)    The introduction of MEMS Technology (32 class hours including 30 in-class hours and 2 laboratory hours)

8)    The Introduction of Mechanical Engineering (16 class hours)

9)    Computer Control Technology (32 class hours including 28 in-class hours and 4 laboratory hours)

All courses should be taught in English.

China University of Mining and Technology will cover the following:

1)    International Round-trip tickets (Economy class, not exceeding $2,000.00. Flight route should be from US city to China gateway city to Xuzhou and Xuzhou to China gateway city to US departure city).

2)    Accommodation provided free-of-charge for 1 month (including weekends) in Xuzhou

3)    One Chinese cultural tour

4)    Meal allowance: ¥ 1,500.00 in total (approx. $227.00)

5)    Teaching stipend for course with 32 class hours:

• Associate Professor: ¥40,000.00 in total (before tax, approx. $6,050.00)
• Professor: ¥60,000.00 in total (before tax, approx. $9,077.00)
• The teaching stipend will increase or decrease depending on the number of required teaching hours for different subjects.

•    A valid passport is needed for this trip. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the conclusion of the trip, which means the passport must be valid through December 2018.

•    UKCI will handle the visa application for successful faculty candidates. Candidates are responsible for paying a visa application fee of $333.50.
