Shoulder to Shoulder Global, in direct collaboration with the community of Santo Domingo, Ecuador and an interdisciplinary UK faculty leadership team, are tentatively offering a one week virtual health brigade experience during December 2021/January 2022.
UK and Ecuadorian virtual brigade students participate in multiple virtual interactive and inter-professional experiences, a virtual presence in clinical consults, cultural learning opportunities such as making ceviche and learning salsa dancing, an overview of the Ecuadorian health system, tours of the community, clinic, and much, much more.
A few comments from the January 4th - 8th 2021 virtual brigade:
"This experience not only taught me about how to interact with people from other cultures, but it also helped me how to interact with patients from all socio-economic levels and recognize people's life experiences since this is pertinent to understanding how to treat them.” - Communications and Sciences Disorders undergraduate participant
“We were given multiple days that covered in clinic visits and conversations with the community. There was pre-brigade work that prepared us for the live portion. The items studied acquainted us with not only the culture as a whole, but with the clinic’s personnel and vital leaders in the community." - UK Patterson School of Diplomacy graduate participant
Students also receive credit for this unique international clinic and cultural experience through EXP 510, Interprofessional Teamwork in Global Health (All students). For students not in the College of Medicine, Pharmacy or Physical Therapy, credit is offered through course #EAP 599.
