This weekend, Huajing Maske, executive director of the Office of China Initiatives and director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, will receive the Amici Linguarum (Friend of Languages) Award given by the Kentucky World Language Association (KWLA). The honor recognizes an individual or organization not directly involved in teaching world languages that has made a significant contribution to the profession.

In celebration of the work being done at Confucius Institutes across the globe, the Office of Chinese Language Council International (colloquially known as the Hanban) and the University of Kentucky Confucius Institute (UKCI) presented Confucius Institute Day. The events included a showcase of Han fashion, dance and ancient music on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall.

Learn about geography and China at this week’s Geography Colloquium presentation by Dr. Stan Brunn,"China Research: Social Media, Social Distance, and Memoryscapes.” As a Visiting Professor at Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, China during the 2013-2014 academic year, Dr. Brunn collaborated on research projects with colleagues and students in China. Dr. Brunn will discuss these projects and lead a discussion about geography and China. The event takes place Friday, October 10 at 3:30 pm in 238 Whitehall Classroom Building.

The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute (UKCI) has received one of five 2014 Confucius Institute of the Year Awards in the U.S. and one of 15 among 470 institutes in the world at the ninth Confucius Institute Conference held Dec. 7, in Xiamen, China. This is UK's second award for the institute and the third competitive award from the Office of Chinese Language Council International (colloquially known as Hanban) in three years.

LEXINGTON, KY. (Jan. 9, 2015) — The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute and the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the UK College of Communication and Information, along with the Community Edition of the XinMin Evening News, the largest evening newspaper in Shanghai, hosted the second Sino-U.S. Community Media Seminar Friday, Jan. 9, at the UK Boone Center. The seminar was preceded by a visit to the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Danville Advocate-Messenger on Thursday.

UKCI held the first PD in 2015 on the UK campus on January 17. Dr. Huajing Maske, Director of UKCI, presented a speech entitled How to Celebrate the Chinese New Year to approximately 40 UKCI Chinese teachers and volunteer teachers.

University of Kentucky Confucius Institute and the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce will present a lecture by Craig A. Hart on positive and negative dynamics of China-U.S. relations. The talk, which will explore aspects of energy and climate, regional security, trade and rule of law, will begin 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the William T. Young Library Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.
