Federal Agencies

Works with all NSF areas to co-fund students and junior researchers at a foreign site.  

Supports the development of globally-engaged U.S. science and engineering students capable of performing in an international research environment in science and engineering and supports students enrolled as undergraduates or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. 

Awards grants to science and engineering students who are involved in international research and education collaborations and who promote the development of a diverse, globally-engaged U.S. scientific and engineering workforce. 

Promotes sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation internationally.

Department of State

The Bureau awards grants and cooperative agreements to nonprofit institutions to conduct educational and cultural exchange programs. 

Provides aid and sustainable solutions for refugees, victims of conflict and stateless people around the world, through repatriation, local integration and resettlement in the United States. 

Awards grants competitively to persons from selected target countries, themes and review criteria. 

Administers a worldwide grant program that reflects both the innovative spirit and generosity of citizens of the United States. 

  • NEH-  Bridging Culture initiative  

The Bridging Culture initiative engages the power of the humanities to promote understanding and mutual respect for people with diverse histories, cultures and perspectives with the United States and abroad. 

Designed to increase and fund mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Foundations/ Other Opportunities

CRDF Global fosters cooperative research and development opportunities that enable scientists and engineers to address critical societal needs. 

  • Energy Foundation 

The foundation is a partnership of major donors interested in solving the world's energy problems.  China is the focus abroad.  

International Programs focus on human rights and international justice, peace and security, conservation and sustainable development, migration, and population and reproductive health. MacArthur grantees work in about 60 countries; the Foundation has offices in India, Mexico, Nigeria, and Russia. 

A policy tool for enhancing cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on civil science and innovation, to contribute to the Alliance’s core goals and to address the priority areas for dialogue and cooperation identified in the new partnership policy. 

  • Partner University Fund  

Promotes innovative partnerships in research and higher education between American and French institutions of higher learning and research. 

Global Health

Global Health at NIH 

The 27 Institutes and Centers (ICs) at the NIH are engaged in global health research and research training activities.   

  • Fogerty International Center- National Institutes of Health   

    The Fogarty International Center is dedicated to advancing the mission of the National Institutes of Health by supporting and facilitating global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, building partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and training the next generation of scientists to address global health needs.

  • NIH Common Fund's Global Health program:

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation  

Awards a majority of its grants to organizations and other tax-exempt organizations that are identified by their staff. The foundation does not make grants directly to individuals. 

Kellogg (W.K.) Foundation  

Provides grants to individuals and organizations seeking to forward and better their communities and other subjects identified by their organization.
