UK Education Abroad works to ensure that faculty and students feel supported throughout their faculty-directed journey. As a program director, you bring your academic expertise and vision for the course. Our team works with you as you plan the experience, prepare students for travel, and connect learning in the classroom with the places they visit.
A strong program gives students opportunities to engage with course material in a new setting and learn from the people and communities around them. From the first idea through the program’s return, you can reach out to our team with questions and talk through the next steps. You are never in it alone.
Planning Your Faculty - Directed Program Course
Which Course Should I Teach?
- Fulfills a major/minor elective
- Fulfills a major/minor required course
- Global Dynamics or UKCORE approved
- Make sure your course doesn’t have too many prerequisites that might limit some students being eligible to take your course
When Do I Talk to My College?
Talk to your college before submitting an SOI application about your ideas for the program and course. Check with leadership to make sure you are approved to teach the course and that it can be taught abroad.
How Do Contact Hours Work Abroad?
The general rule remains that 45 contact hours = 3 credits. Contact hours can be done in a variety of ways within the term::
- Online
- Before travel
- After travel
- Classroom time and during program activities

What is EAP 599?
EAP 599 is a one-credit course that students are enrolled in during stand-alone FD programs. This course adjusts tuition for remaining program credits, so if you are teaching a 3-credit course abroad over the summer, the students only have to pay for 1 credit.
