Faculty-Directed

Faculty-Directed programming enables UK faculty to take their students and their courses to the global classroom. UK EA’s Faculty-Directed (FD) Team can support you from idea development to program implementation and beyond.  After submitting a Statement of Intent (SOI) and getting it approved, we will work with you to build a program utilizing industry-recognized best practices and support systems. Where will your course take you?

Who can Lead?

  • Faculty and Staff

    • UK faculty or staff can propose through UK EA to lead a program/teach a class abroad with their college/department's support.
      • For faculty, this includes full-time title series levels such as professor, lecturer, clinical, or researcher.
      • Staff need to be approved to teach and in a full-time exempt role at the university.
      • Check with the Faculty-Directed team for additional details.
  • Roles & Expectations

    • The Program Director (PD) is the primary leader and Statement of Intent (SOI) submitter; central communication point for EA and central resource for students and partners. PDs play a vital role in marketing, logistics, student support, and academic delivery.

Program Info

Embedded (Spring, Fall)

  • Course contact hours and instruction happen during a Spring or Fall course on campus + short time abroad.
  • Spring break (less than 10 days) or May Travel (less than 2 weeks) - NOTE: academics MUST be completed BEFORE summer term begins.

  • A short time abroad means the schedule is often packed, leaving less time for exploration. It can be easy to fit into students’ schedules; financial aid can also be a bit easier.

Stand alone (Summer, Winter Break)

  • Course contact hours and instruction happen during the time abroad. There can be pre-/post-abroad coursework. Summer (2-6 weeks) or Winter (around 2 weeks).
  • Offers more time for course and exploration in the location for students. Finding the perfect time during the summer can be tricky due to students with internships and part-time jobs. Financial aid for summer is available, but winter term is tricky.

Customizing Program Partners

Customizing program partners/providers are vetted groups that assist with building your program. They will handle the logistics, such as housing, transportation, site visits, entry fees, finding local experts or groups, etc. Providers also assist with risk and emergency support. All FD programs are required to use one, and your FD Coordinator will work with you to find a partner that works best for your program. UK EA has a list of vetted providers we have used in the past.

Itinerant (Multiple Cities) vs Resident

Itinerant programs go to multiple countries or multiple cities in one country, while resident programs typically stay in one city with day trips to other cities. Guests, such as dependents, are not allowed to join itinerant programs. For more on our guest policy, click here.

Non-UK Faculty-Directed Options

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) and the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) also regularly utilize UK faculty to teach on their summer and winter programs. These programs are not managed through UK EA. Please email these groups directly for more information.
