Explore First shapes futures for UK’s first-generation graduates

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 14, 2026) — There’s an overlook in Scott County, Tennessee, where Mollie Overton used to watch the sunset with friends, imagining what her future might hold. Now a first-generation student at the University of Kentucky, Overton has turned that sense of “one day” into reality — in part through Explore First: Careers, Cultures and Connections, a study abroad program designed to prepare first-gen students for global careers and new possibilities.

NextGen Service Fellowship provides students hands-on international experience

UK student awarded 2026 English-Speaking Union Scholarship

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 20, 2026) — Hunter Coady, a junior from Crestwood, Kentucky, was recently awarded a 2026 English-Speaking Union Scholarship. The award covers full tuition and expenses for the student’s three-week experience at the University of Oxford. The English-Speaking Union of the United States is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, education service organization whose mission is to promote scholarship and the advancement of knowledge using English in an expanding global community.

Nominations open for 2026 Global Impact Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 3, 2026) — The University of Kentucky International Center is seeking nominations for the 2026 UK Global Impact Awards. Nominations are being accepted through April 15. Each year, since 2020, UK’s Global Impact Awards recognize faculty and staff contributions to UK’s global engagement through education, research and service and feature awards for alumni and community partners.

UK’s Estate Whiskey Alliance expands to Scotland with Ballindalloch Distillery

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 13, 2026) — The University of Kentucky’s Estate Whiskey Alliance (EWA) today announced that Ballindalloch Distillery, a distillery producing single malt Scotch whisky, has joined the organization as its newest member. The addition marks a milestone for the EWA, as Ballindalloch Distillery becomes its first member located outside of North America.

‘I never dreamed I’d see it’: UK Astronaut Scholar conducts research in Madagascar

When she was a child, Jaesylin Stephens, a senior biology major in the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences, saw nature documentaries on Madagascar. She never imagined, though, that she would one day visit the east African county. “I never dreamed I’d get to see it with my own eyes,” Stephens said. “I’ll never forget finding bamboo lemurs on my first day in the field. I couldn’t believe I was just a few feet below such a unique, rare and endangered animal in its natural habitat.”

UK scientists and scholars among top 2% of most-cited researchers in the world

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 24, 2026) — The University of Kentucky is well-represented on a list of the most-cited researchers in the world. In a database compiled by Stanford University in a partnership with Elsevier, 112 current UK scientists and scholars appear among the top 2% of the most-cited researchers across 22 disciplines.
