Academic Advisors play a key role in encouraging and supporting students to incorporate an education abroad experience into their University of Kentucky education. Advisors can help students understand what major, minor, or general electives credits they can complete abroad, and when may be an ideal time to go abroad and stay on track with their planned graduation date.

If you have a question about a specific program, course, or student, the designated Education Abroad Contact for your college can be found here. For additional information, or promotion and outreach requests, please contact educationabroad@uky.edu.

Roles & Responsibilities

Planning early is KEY! Students are encouraged to start thinking about incorporating education abroad as early as their freshman year. Students should:

  • Brainstorm their goals and decide which program is best for them

Getting Started: EA Conversation Starters

Before meeting with their Education Abroad Advisor, UKEA recommends that students meet with their Academic Advisor to discuss course options and timing of participating on an education abroad program. While no two student journeys will be the same, you can help a student consider when they can go abroad and what program will work best for them by asking them these questions:

  • Are they interested in a STUDY, INTERN, TEACH, or RESEARCH experience abroad?
  • What TERM would they like to go abroad?
  • What COURSES do they need to take on campus?
  • What ELECTIVES or UK CORE can they complete abroad?
  • Do any post-grad or preprofessional tracks LIMIT when they can go?
  • How much SUPPORT are they seeking abroad? What program TYPE is right for them?

Curriculum Integration

Education Abroad & Exchanges strives to offer programs and courses for students in every major. Curriculum Integration evaluates education abroad program offerings to ensure they align with University of Kentucky majors and minors to maximize available study abroad opportunities.

Developing EA Major Advising Pages

Major Advising Pages (MAP) feature education abroad programs chosen by academic departments and EA that are most appropriate for that area of study. Participating in a program featured on a student’s MAP will allow them to complete coursework for your major/minor that has already been approved to transfer, or will offer coursework to compliment the degree at UK.

EA is interested in engaging with academic and administrative departments to improve Major Advising Pages. If you are interested in learning more and/or would like to collaborate on a Major Advising Page, please contact allison.peoples@uky.edu

Advising Workshops

EA hosts an annual Spring Education Abroad Advising Workshop open to all Advising staff on campus.

If you are interested in learning more and/or would like to request an Advising workshop for your department please contact educationabroad@uky.edu
